About the Victorian Bed & Breakfast and Tea Room

The Historic Mathis House

The Mathis House, former home of Thomas A. Mathis, who early in the last century was a leading political figure in Ocean County.  The mansion, a stunning example of Dutch Revival architecture, was built in 1898. It is a three-story structure, with a grand porch, portico, graceful lawns and the original preserved carriage house. Visitors can use the circular driveway from Main Street to enter through the home’s magnificent wooden front doors or use the private well-lit parking area located behind the Inn.

The mansion has an impressive foyer, Parlor Room, formal Dining Room, Library, Butterfly Room and Sea Glass Room on the first floor all decorated with exquisite formal seating for the entire Tea Room. The focal point of the entrance includes an impressive wooden oak staircase near the baby grand piano that leads up to the second floor and a gathering room for our four guest suites: Lady Genevieve, Princess VictoriaLady Samantha and the famous, Queen Alexa, all with private bathrooms and upscale amenities. The beauty continues to the staircase to the third floor where there is the Innkeeper's Quarters.

The house is surrounded by manicured lawns, stately trees and tasteful landscaping.  The Mathis House has additional parking located behind the building.  We also have a handicapped lift at the porch, but please note all guest rooms are on the second floor with stair access only.  The building is on the historical landmark registrar and not required to have an elevator for the Bed and Breakfast rooms.  Please consider this carefully when booking an overnight stay.

When making reservations, guests can choose the room in which they would like to stay. Each overnight visit includes a full hot breakfast and refreshments in the evening. Services and other amenities can be arranged, that include full Victorian Afternoon Teas, a fine dining experience and chocolate covered strawberries waiting in your room may also be arranged in advance by the Innkeeper.

Upon arrival between the check in times of 3 to 5 pm, each overnight guest and tearoom visitor will receive a tour of the Historic Mansion and learn about the rich history and tales of this Hidden Gem in the Heart of Downtown Toms River. It is the mission and vision of the Mathis House is to preserve an era of history for many generations to come.

Pictured below is our sister property known as the "Huddy House Bed & Breakfast" that is scheduled to open in the early Spring of 2024.  For more information on overnight stays when our rooms are fully booked, please call the Mathis House for availability and rates.
